"Rebellion's are built on hope".
Star Wars:
Rogue One
Review
So I have seen the new Star Wars film and I have to say that it’s awesome! It’s dark, fun. I’d say very cool. I would also say that this is a film that George Lucas wouldn’t have approSved nor okayed to have happen. At least in the main film area on T.V. or in another medium sure. Yet, if he was going to make his story for his films he would have ignored or done whatever he wanted so in a way undo or erase this great Star Wars entry.
Rogue One is a challenging film. It’s a war film set inside the Star Wars universe. Which I know for parents out there would make you pause. This is though a film that is about the rebels and those that fight. Nothing to do with Skywalker and that family. Which is what the main franchise is about. You see what it was like for the rebels to fight against the Empire and the people having to make a choice. Either to join or try and live without fighting and without getting the Empire’s attention.
This being the 8th film in the series and first in the series that didn’t involve the Skywalker family and involve the side character’s. It’s a very bold idea and it works. We have our Jedi that never officially acknowledged that he’s Jedi and you have the other band of men that help fight all for there own reasons. Some are explained as with Jyn Erso and her family. These are the early day of the Rebellion they have gathered but haven’t fully fought the Empire.
That is when they hear about the new war machine the Empire has cooked up. Bring in The Death Star. That is when they are off to the races and while there isn’t that many action pieces early in the film it’s a slow building movie. That is what makes it special.
There isn’t much about this film that I would say is bad. Without spoiling the film I would say that a certain CGI character is a bit much CGI. I liked the direction and the special effects. Disney and Lucasfilm has let them use special effect and models effectively over the last two films. I would also say that Gareth Edwards knew what he was doing and was very sure footed in making this picture. Since this is set during the rebellion years it does have cameo’s and they are nice touches here and there. Even Vader shows up which is very creepy and fun to watch. That was already revealed so not as really a spoiler.
There is a lot of death though I must warn parents out there. There is basically a choice of a no win situation and in that it’s played out in full. I think it’s awesome and shows kids that even when there is no way truly out you must fight.
Star Wars: Rogue One is a dark and fun film that has the true heart of Star Wars in that you gather your friends and fight the darkness. Heart and friendship and togetherness is shown. While it is violent and dark it’s no more violent than the other films and it does take a few beats to show the horror of a violent transaction. I don’t think is a bad thing. I took a eight year old and my five year old. Both loved the film and was thrilled by it. I’m also glad that for the eight year old it was his first time seeing a Star Wars movie on the big screen. I give this film a thumbs up. A big, huge thumb up!
