Geekdom! 1. X-Men
X-Men
When I was a kid I use to wake up and watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and X-men animated series. I really liked the X-men. They were cool and the show was a lot of fun. As I got older they finally made the jump to the big screen. Seeing them in the early 2000’s was fun.
The series was created by Stan Lee. Whom created majority of Marvel’s biggest heavy hitters. This goes back to the 60’s and you can see it in the DNA of X-Men. Basically Proffessor X (Charles Xavior) is Martin Luthor King and Magneto is basically Malcom X. Both are pretty much the top two powerful mutants. Mutants are people that grew up as a normal person but somewhere along the line they have become superhuman. The mutant gene pops up giving the person superpowers.
Professor X is the leader. He is paralized but can slip into peoples thoughts and can freeze time as well. Magneto is one that uses metal as his power. His group is called the Brotherhood. The backstory is that they gathered mutants to protect mutants and make keep them safe from humans. Both wanting to help them; that is where things differ though. X believes in humanity and it’s goodness. Where since Magneto’s parents were Holocaust victims he sees them as something that should be put down before they put the mutant race down. This is where the heart of this comic series to me lies. It’s in the “alien” feeling of life. We have all felt different and or are different. While yes I think for those reading these graphic novels and seeing the films it’s LGBTQ but an arguement could be made that it’s just as set for those that are right wing as well. It fits for anyone that feels outside the “normal”. Whatever that means or is.
The X-Men members are Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Beast, Angel, Iceman. As the series has gone on through the decades more and more mutants were created and added. Some taken out and changed up, or given there own series or set of comics. Some of the Brotherhood members are Mystic, Toad, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch.
This is the series that kicked off the Marvel movie and proved that comic book movies could make money and please audiences. The first two are directed by Brian Singer and should be watched if you haven’t seen them. While I think X-2 is a bit bloated it’s still fun. Singer likes to jam pack his comic book movies. It’s fun seeing who will pop up and where. I also want to note that for those that don’t know
Deadpool is attached to this world as well. He goes through the same thing as Wolverine does. I’m glad too that they are in the comic world bringing back X-Men. It was silly to sit and get upset because you needing money sold the rights and can’t get them back. That is dumb to be honest and then try and replace them. This series sold a lot of comics and helped keep Marvel going. So soon there will be two comic series. Two different teams. Now if we can just get a really cool 90’s set X-Men movie.
