Legion and Mental Illness
Those that are new here and or haven't seen the other blog posts mental illness is actually a part of my life. My Mother was bipolar and so is my Father in law. The first one being depressive and the other being manic. Which is why I was interested in not just how they would deal with the mental aspects of the main character in Legion. Yet, how would it be? Would it be like Split and be exploitive or near that? Would it be the other way around and used in a more honest way and interesting way. I'm glad to say that it's the latter. I haven't seen Split though I do plain on it and I hope that it's not explotive at all. That isn't what is need especially with the political climate that is active these days.
I loved the premiere for this show. I have put this in the review that it's told through David Haller, and he's a schizophrenic. Someone that has this really bad mental illness is a person that can hear voices and see things that aren't there. There mind is not their friend nor is it reliable, and how they see things is totally skewed. Which is what I love about having him tell this pilot episode.
Setting him up you see how hard it is one moment you go along with it and then the next just like him you are questioning what is going on wondering where the lines of realities and there are visual cues to kind of help you but that was placed by a director, and art house. David Haller doesn't have any of that and in turn I think it makes him a sympathetic character really. You feel for him, or you empathize with him. Which in this day and age and everything going on isn't really a bad thing. It's through sympathy that one is able to grow not just as a being but a person. So maybe people won't be so afraid or put off by what they see and hear about mental illness. That would be the nice effect from this show.
If they actually keep it going I think it should be very interesting. I’m very excited about this show and how they treat and handle characters. Marvel has shown that you can definitely come up with an interesting character driven television, and in doing so push the bar of comic book based entertainment.
