The Gunslinger's finale
Just this past week Tony Romo retired from the NFL. While I know this isn't exactly geek news there are people that do love NFL that I would say is on par of obsession and to me that is geek news. I wanted to actually say something about Tony Romo, and the Dallas Cowboys.
Tony Romo has retired and moved on to CBS sports covering there national weekly game, as he's taking over for Phil Sims. Who actually hadn't been told about this decision from the network at all. Which I guess in a way is kind of fitting for Romo. One of the most controversial Cowboy quarterbacks we'v had in probably a long time.
For those that don't know I'm a Cowboys fan and while I enjoy and have enjoyed Romo I'm not a total Romo fan. I enjoyed seeing him out gun and march down the field sometimes to most epic effect. Tearing a part a defense and winning the game. Though I would say that that is actually one of his weaknesses. Yes, if I was a sport team owner I would like that fact about Romo. I'd also in the next breath be pulling out my hair from the way the games went.
Romo was wasted a lot of years. Until a few years ago he never really had a good line. A group of men that could honestly protect him and keep him safe. So basically he would snap the ball and it would be a count before somebody knocked him down. I'm not saying he doesn't have heart or resolve to play. He does he's played sick and he has played his heart out. His biggest influence is Brett Farve and you can see that type of play in his playing.
Jerry Jones though never really gave him the total tools and when he did I don't think Romo knew how to use them. I mean there is a thing to say about what Dax was using. He wasn't using people that Romo already had made available. In that way Dax had them shinning.
So for all the Cowboy fan's out there it's over. Romo won't get his Super Bowl nor will he be mentioned with the same reverie as Troy Aikman, or Roger Staubach. He will though get his Ring of Honor and while he does deserve that Jones would have given that to him just because he's so close to Romo.
I do think that Romo is upset with management, because they wouldn't let him go. They wouldn't let him get traded nor release him. It was Jones's doing. He so believes and wants that I think Jones as a man is very narrow minded person. On the general manager side he sucks. Losing Romo and letting him properly go off into the sunset isn't something that Jones thinks of. I think he thinks that his "guys" will always be there. We as fan's know that his time will end, either by his own or not his own. That is sports, and the nature of it. The fact that he has a lot of money and power he's use to getting his way and I think he's upset that he won't get what he wants with the story of Tony Romo.
Either way it's been fun and it will keep being fun. It's hilarious and kind of sad that now that he's a part of the CBS broadcasting stations CBS didn't tell Phil Sims. As it's turning out they announced and it was Phil's son that told his dad. I think no matter what Tony will always be marred in controversy and he's not I don't think a controversial person. Anyhow, just another day in being a Cowboy fan. Just wanted to say goodbye Gunslinger and I enjoyed watching you play.
