Joss Whedon and Batgirl
A while back it was announced by Warner that Joss Whedon would bring some of his Marvel magic and touch to help with the DC universe; directing, writing and finally producing the Batgirl flick. Which if you look at it isn't that bad of an idea.
He has made his career in female driven movies, and TV shows. He's the one that created Buffy for crying out loud and it was an interesting choice. Though my immediate wasn't that he was doing this or the controversy that has since followed. I thought it he might be more inclined in doing original stories and not adapting. Honestly I was looking forward to zombies and World War 2. That would be a really cool movie. On the back end of this movie deal hopefully Warner would fund that movie since he's scratching there back should scratch his.
Then came the whole pick consideration. Warner choosing Joss though means that they have to play ball. This is a way for Warner to show that they can work with other's out there and not ruin there films. They wanted to be the more director vision of making superhero films. I'm not saying that there isn't some bad sides to actually having him as writer, and director, and not hiring a female director and backing her.
When it comes to actually what he's said I would say that I wouldn't be a fan of. I don't think that her being a totally dark, angry like person...ala Batman. There is a Huge background when it comes to this character. There are I believe four different names and characters that go with this moniker. Making Batgirl which ever character and or hybrid they create doesn't always have to be angry and dark. I'm not sure that even though this is a side character in the Batman universe she needs to be.
Batman's villians and supporting characters are great extensions of Batman. In that respect she doesn't need to be a brooding person. She could bring one of cheer and while sometimes have her dark moments could be a more shinning light in the world of darkness for The Batman. Not all the superhero's have to be like Batman. Green Arrow could have been just as interesting if they haven't Nolaned him for his TV show.
