Suicide Squad Review
Suicide Squad Review
Theatrical cut review
For those of you who don’t remember this it’s a film that is finally having it’s day on DVD. It’s also the third movie in the now DCEU (DC expanded universe for those that don’t know.) and connected to Man of Steel and Superman vs. Batman films. It was a good idea to step away from Batman and Superman and try and tell a story still in the Universe but away from those two. I was excited to hear that they were giving something not part of the Trinity a shot. The Trinity as they call them is Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman. That being said I’m disappointed in saying that I thought the film was okay. It’s a vibrant and very colorful gritty film but ultimately I didn’t care that much.
The movie is directed and written by David Ayer. Whom you may know is the man behind Training Day. He’s the one that wrote that movie and someone else directed it. He then did another cop film End of Watch. Which is a gritty cool intense film. I was all for David Ayer getting to make this Suicide Squad. I don’t think he comes from a comic book background but I thought he would bring something interesting and a lot of fun. Which he does. He does hit the tone of the movie right. It feels exactly as if the comic books we buy has come to life in our hands and has jumped on the screen. It’s cool and very well done. I have no problems with the directions or style of the film I have a problem with the story. The story feels great till you get towards the end of the movie. It falls apart.] The other major plus I have to say is the soundtrack. Warner Brother’s must have spent a fortune spending money securing the rights to use those songs in the film. The film is tailored made to the characters and situations. If you're a fan of Quentin Tarantino then you’ll be a fan of the use of the music for this film.
On the character side this film definitely feels like a Will Smith and Margot Robbie vehicle. The Joker is only teased at and for that matter Batman. Which isn’t really a bad thing and is something I do like. These are the side characters and or villains to Flash and Batman so those guys shouldn’t be heavy into the film. The run time for the movie is a 190 minutes and while it does run at a brisk pace there are times when I just found that I didn’t care. I loved their version of Deadshot and Harley. There is a lot of funny comedy and cool moments. The other characters are fleshed out to some degree. Some better than others.
While the film is naughty in parts not overtly to bad it does fall under the stronger aspects of PG-13 just in the uses of language. Keep in mind too that as I mentioned under the title head of this post it was the theatrical. I can’t speak for the extended version but can pretty much say that with some certainty that it’s probably a bit rougher. I know that some of the parents out there we're thinking it would be a bit much after the Heath Ledger turn of Joker and I honestly have to say that Heath is still the most extreme. I can’t wait to see if they do push him a bit more then Nolan did for Dark Knight.
Having said everything that I have said about Suicide Squad I give it a thumbs up but one where I would spend the money on a rental. It’s good for a rental and not exactly for your library. I do hope though that WB gets it together and starts to fight back against Marvel and there films. It needs to happen the comic book movies need competition especially since they have plans for at least 2020 of films. WB as a whole is kicking but on TV and in animation. There is more good products I think over all then Marvel is doing for there products. Before I go there will be a Suicide Squad 2 and a Harley Quinn sequel where we will be getting Poison Ivy team up.

I like your review.
ReplyDeleteLet me just say that this movie was like emptying the DC toy box and doing something fun with the B string of toys. You know the toys I am talking about, the ones that your brother "lets" you play with. I really liked that it was heavy DEADSHOT. No it wasn't THE DS from the comics....I dare to say it was better. I have accepted this version as THE version! Lol -CrystyCartoon
